Are Specialty Coffee Drinks really Worth the Hype

You do not have to be a coffee drinker to know about specialty coffee drinks. Anyone who goes to a fast food restaurant has probably noticed a specialty coffee offered around a holiday or change in season. If you do not really understand what the big deal is about these coffee drinks, then you are in good company. To get a better understanding of what all the hype is about; one must take a closer look at some of those fancy coffee drinks.

The first thing to know is that many specialty coffee drinks are made with espresso as the base. Espresso is an interesting coffee in its own right. The grounds of espresso are finer than regular coffee grounds. The finer grounds produce a stronger coffee with slightly less caffeine content. All of the coffee drinks listed below are made with espresso.

Cafe Americano

This drink is made with a shot of espresso, 6 ounces of hot water and then milk and sugar can be added as per “American style”. Basically some people would consider this drink a diluted espresso. If you do not like a lot of frills with your coffee drink, then this might be for you. You get the benefit of the espresso flavor without it being so strong.

Espresso Macchiato

This drink is made with a shot of espresso and 1 1/2 tablespoons of frothed milk.

Cappuccino

This drink is made with 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3 frothed milk. Of course there are variances and different types of cappuccino, but this is the basic recipe.

Caffe Au Lait

This coffee drink is French and made with strongly brewed coffee and warm milk (generally served in a separate pitcher or container). It is generally served in a wide mouthed cup and is great for those super cold days because you can warm your hands on the cup while warming your insides by drinking the coffee.

Mochaccino

This drink is made with a shot of espresso, 5 ounces of steamed milk and topped with foam.

One thing to say for sure is that if you do not enjoy espresso, you probably will not enjoy most specialty coffee drinks. Some people take one sip of a specialty coffee drink and immediately spit it out or force themselves to swallow it and vow to never try it again. Some people take one sip and fall in love with it and make it a personal mission to try as many different kinds as possible.

In the end, it is up to the individual to decide if they think specialty coffee drinks are worth ordering. Not every coffee drinker will enjoy specialty drinks; some enjoy a plain old cup of black coffee and some enjoy it with a little cream and sugar. Some coffee drinkers may decide that the specialty drinks are the only way to go and wish they had discovered them much sooner.
